Back to Training Workshops

Presented by Krystyna Kinowski, M.A.,Ph.D.
April 8, 9, 2005
With Susan Hubbard, MSW, LCSW - at 810 Kalmia Ave., Boulder, CO

This workshop is organized around a four-page protocol called "Best Foot Forward." It is an eight-stage procedure that usually can be done in one session early in treatment. Best Foot Forward integrates standard EMDR with body-based approaches, and restructures these components into a process for empowerment. Processing is structured around triads of image, affect, and physical sensation. Participants will acquire a procedure that feels both familiar yet novel, and perhaps reminds them of something in their background training.

BFF is applicable to a wide variety of problems, especially unwanted, trait-like behaviors connected to physiological stress. Typically, clients report they feel stuck in this repertoire of responses, despite awareness and self-help books. We routinely see this in clinical depression, anxiety disorders, identity problems, constricted self-capacities, as well as PTSD. When used prior to the standard EMDR protocol, BFF eases the client into smoother, more confident processing, and gives client-owned resources for autonomic stabilization and ego state interweaves.

BFF is being used by a growing number of EMDR therapists. External case reports are consistent with the original database of 40 clients. Most of what is appealing and exciting about this protocol was not planned or predicted. BFF also seems to help broader capacities such as compassion for self and others. Susan Hubbard describes the outcome as a shift in the geological plates underneath the problem terrain the client wants to change. Most clients find the upbeat, positive approach a refreshing change.

This program is for EMDR trained therapists. A link to a mail-in registration form is at the end of this web page. Register early and get the cheaper rate. Lunch is included. Workshop facilities are ADA compliant.

Saturday April 9 ADVANCED PRACTICUM

Day 2 begins with unedited tape of an entire BFF session. This will give participants a sense of the clinical flow with this protocol. We will analyze the process from different perspectives - therapist-client factors, information processing factors, especially somatosensory or 'bottom-up' processing, and similarities and differences with the standard EMDR protocol. Also covered are ways to capitalize on the imagery from BFF in subsequent treatment. The protocol has unexpectedly led to improvement in one or more domains of executive functioning - such as affect modulation, relationship capacity, task management, and general sense of well-being. We will look at some possible explanations for these outcomes.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Krystyna Kinowski is a licensed psychologist with a background in graduate teaching, formal psychological assessments, and wide-ranging clinical experience over the past 30 years. She has an independent practice in Victoria, BC where she specializes in psychotherapy for both children and adults. She received her doctorate in Applied Psychology from the University of Toronto in 1985 and has three prior degrees. Her training and experience meet the additional criteria for listing with the Canadian Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Her EMDR experience began in 1994 and she became EMDRIA certified in 2001. Her theoretical orientation is Object Relations Theory, her assessment focus is information processing for executive functions, and her general approach in psychotherapy is humanistic/experiential.

Krystyna's current interest, some would say obsession, is the neurophysiology of mental health and the positive affects, and ways to tap into these using the wisdom of the body. This evolved from developing a body-based EMDR protocol and being thoroughly perplexed by its results. The protocol came to be called Best Foot Forward. It was first presented at EMDRIA 2002, then at the EMDR European Conference in Rome 2003, EMDRAC 2003 in Toronto, and again in longer workshops in San Francisco, Boulder, Berkeley, Olympia, and San Diego. Krystyna Kinowski is an approved EMDRIA Credit Provider.

Susan Hubbard is a licensed therapist in Boulder with thirty-three years of clinical experience and EMDRIA certification. She earned her MSW degree from Columbia University in 1966. Her work is with adults and couples, and as a Diplomate in the American Board of Sexology, she has special expertise in working with sexuality. Susan took Krystyna's BFF workshop early in 2003 and has been using BFF ever since. Together they have refined the clinical application of the protocol for special issues and have enough accumulated material for a casebook.
